Mission

“The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished:

  • By providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats

  • By providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas

  • By working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.” --Information Power: Guidelines for Schools Library Media Programs (1988), p. 1

Hours and Access

The Library is open from 7:25 to 2:45 every school day and operates on a open and flexible access schedule.

  • Individual students or student groups may come any time to the library during class with a pass (Limit 6 students per class at one time, please)

  • Teachers may bring whole classes or large groups to use the library facilities and/or resources (Sign up on library calendar, please)

  • After planning a collaborative lesson with the library media specialist, the teacher may bring a class for a information literacy or technology instruction (See the library media specialist for more information, please)

  • Teachers may plan meetings, workshops, or other gatherings before, during and after school (Sign up on library calendar, please)

Circulation Policy

  • Teachers may check out books or resource materials for 14 days. Reference materials may be checked out for one day only by Teachers.
  • Students may check out 2 books for 14 days.
  • Teachers and students may renew books unless another patron has a reserve placed on the material.
  • No fines will be charged; however, a student will not be allowed to check out or reserve another book until the book is returned or replacement cost is paid.
  • Overdue notices will be provided weekly through the homeroom teachers.
  • Students may only use Reference materials in the media center.

Alabama Virtual Library

AVL cards are issued from the circulation desk for home use of Alabama Virtual Library, a state-operated online library.  Teachers may request an instructional lesson from the Library Media Specialist on using the Alabama Virtual Library from school and/or home.  The Alabama Virtual Library also includes a self-guided tour to help students learn how to use it from home.

Other Policies

The library advisory committee consists of faculty, parents and students and advises on local issues and material selection.  Dunbar Magnet School library follows the District policies for selecting materials, budgeting, Internet acceptable use, and reconsideration of materials requests.  See the Mobile County Public School System Library Media Services Handbook for more information.
